Sunday Service Cancelled 3/15 and 3/22
After further prayer and discussion with the elders of Urban Grace, along with discussions with medical professionals within our faith family, and other churches around our city we have decided to take more drastic steps for our Sunday morning worship gatherings than were previously outlined in yesterday’s email. We will be cancelling our Sunday morning worship gathering for March 15th, and March 22nd.
This may sound like an overreaction to the current threat that Coronavirus places on Calgarians at this time, but we believe that we are being called to exercise caution and protect the flock at Urban Grace and to play our part in helping stop the spread of this virus by avoiding meetings of large groups of people. We also recognize that we are in close proximity to the senior’s residence across the street, a population that could face life-threatening consequences if the virus were contracted and spread through their residence. In following Christ, we are commanded to love our neighbour, and sometimes love for our neighbour means that we have to take drastic measures to help protect them.
We are still encouraging you to take part in your city groups and gather together at your City Group leader’s direction. We will not be able to live stream our music and sermon this week, but we’re hoping that we will have that figured out for next week.
For this week, we encourage you to gather as a City Group on Sunday morning. I will be taking my sermon and making it into a devotional with questions and reflections which you can do as a small group.
As stated yesterday, this is not a time for us to panic, but a time for us to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and demonstrate acts of loving-kindness to our neighbours which reflect the love that our saviour has shown to us. Please look for opportunities both within your City Group families and within your neighbourhood to show love and peace in a stressful and uncertain time. Get together with your neighbours and their children (especially if schools close), shovel your neighbour’s driveway, check-in on neighbours who are being displaced and disrupted from their regular communities because of this virus and find ways to connect with them. Look for hard to find items at the grocery store like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, canned goods, etc., and share them with those who have needs.
Just because we are not gathering corporately on Sunday morning does not mean that the great commission stops. See this as an opportunity for a great expansion of the gospel in the city of Calgary. The church has an excellent opportunity to stand up in our communities and meet the spiritual, emotional, physical, and relational needs of those around us in Jesus’ name. The world is desperately in need of a saviour, and events like this expose our worthless and insufficient idols as false saviours. Look for opportunities to point people to the true saviour, Jesus Christ, and how He brings peace in these times of uncharted and unknown storms that we are all facing.
Also… Please continue to tithe to Urban Grace during this time. Even though we are not having Sunday services we still have expenses, plans for our building purchase, and missionaries and church plants that depend on our giving. You can give cheques and cash in sealed envelopes to your City Group leaders which will be passed along to an elder or Dave Bone, or consider signing up for tithely even if it’s for a short time until things are back to normal.
Continue to follow AHS guidelines and stay home from any public place if you are sick. Again, please reach out to the elders and your City Group leaders if you have any needs or prayer requests. We love you and we are here for you!
We will be sending out a couple of emails each week to update you and keep you posted on what’s going on within the church.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to an elder if you have any questions or any needs that we can assist you with.
To God be the glory,
Elders Jeremiah, Matt, Johnny, Simon and Tim.
