Bringing Grace to the City

Who We Are

Calgary needs Jesus. We see the city as a place that Jesus loves deeply because of the density and diversity of the people who live there.

We want to bring the GRACE of Jesus to Calgary.

Grace is a word that describes unearned blessing and forgiveness and it is our hope to bring grace to everyone we come in contact with.

Our Vision

My name is Trevor Rysavy, and I’m the Lead Pastor of the church plant: Urban Grace. Over the past couple years, Jesus has been working on our family’s hearts to give us a passion to plant a movement of churches in Calgary. Although there has always been a great need to plant churches, the urgency of it did not surface in our lives until late 2007. At that time Jesus began to deeply burden me with a love for the city (as a strategic place of ministry) and the passion to challenge urban dwellers to live on mission for Jesus Christ.

Calgary is a city that’s very close to both Lesley (my wife) and I. For Lesley, it is her hometown, and I have lived near or around the city for the last 10 years. In 2008, we began to test this call through a respected assessment process (Acts 29 church planting network). In early 2009, we began exploring the plan for what became URBAN GRACE in 2010. Since then, Jesus has been good and kind to show favour as we continue to preach about Him and live out the effects of His grace in our lives. We believe more than ever that Jesus will continue to use Urban Grace to be a church-planting church. That’s our dream: to ignite a movement that begins with one church but spreads to see many churches planted in Calgary, and throughout Alberta. We believe this will ultimately change our city, our province and subsequently our country.

We’re the first to admit this is a large and dangerous vision, but we believe it’s from Jesus. We hope that you will consider finding ways to join us in accomplishing this vision and that you’ll continue to pray that URBAN GRACE becomes a church that sees many people in Calgary come to know Jesus and worship Him.

ABOUT THE SERMON

Our ‘Big’ (Sunday morning) gatherings are designed to connect people with Jesus and other members of His family. On Sundays we gather to hear about Jesus from the Bible. We’re all given a chance to respond to what Jesus is teaching us through music, the Lord’s Table, and giving. If you are new to our church—or church in general—this is a great place for you to get introduced to who we believe is the most important person in history: Jesus Christ.

It’s important to know that we also value ‘Small’ gatherings, which we call City Groups. Our Sunday mornings (the ‘Big’) are designed to help you understand who Jesus is and what He has done for you. Our City Groups (the ‘Small’) are designed to act like family units where real community happens.

When you visit Urban Grace for a Sunday gathering, the greeters and connect team can provide you with more information about how to join a [City Group] or to join a service team.

Urban Grace is a vibrant multi-generational church family, and we love to welcome new families with children. Urban Grace Kids provides an opportunity for kids (infants to age 10) to learn about Jesus while parents and caregivers attend the Sunday gathering. Kids can be dropped off in their classrooms beginning at 10:15am and should be picked up during the Communion portion of the gathering, immediately following the sermon.

CHURCH PLANTING

We are a very proud member of the C2C Church planting network. The C2C network is a missions based, Canadian network, that exists to see Canada reached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. While many of us in the C2C network are affiliated with the Mennonite Brethren Church, we collectively want to see Gospel Centered, Spirit Led, Mission Focused churches planted across Canada, and we recognize that we cannot accomplish this task on our own. Therefore, the C2C network is unapologetically interdenominational. It is a group that is passionate about collaborating with other denominations to train and coach church planters. C2C network desires to develop “best practices” in Church Planting in order to accomplish this purpose.

Urban Grace is also a proud member of Acts 29, a network that helps men plant Jesus-loving churches all over the world. Over the last ten years Acts 29 has emerged from a small band of brothers to over 500 churches around the world. We want to allow a unifying, uncommon movement of God to happen through Acts 29. Centered on the Gospel, we desire to advance the mission of Jesus through obediently planting church-planting churches. It is our hope to see this lead to millions of lives being changed by the power of the Spirit for the glory of God.
